This trust provides for the cleaning and annual maintenance of the monument and headstones located in the Adams family plot at Maplewood Cemetery, Durham, North Carolina.
The monument and headstones were originally covered with lichen, mold, dust, and dirt, obscuring their natural character and historical detail.
They were gently cleaned using D/2 Biological Cleaner — a non-toxic solution trusted for preservation across historic landmarks and cemeteries.
In just a few days, the stones appeared remarkably improved and will continue to whiten naturally with exposure to sun and rainfall.
Our client reached out for the seasonal cleaning of several flat headstones within their family plot. Alongside those, they also requested that the large central monument be professionally cleaned and restored to its former dignity.
With the arrival of spring, we carefully treated each surface using trusted, non-invasive methods, ensuring that both delicate engravings and stone textures were preserved.

The monument had endured years of algae, biological growth, and creeping vines that slowly overtook its surface and concealed its original stonework.
Through gentle, preservation-safe techniques, we carefully removed the overgrowth — revealing the dignity and craftsmanship of the monument beneath.
Cleaning the pillars with their intricate designs took considerable time and care. Using a combination of D/2 Biological Cleaner and plenty of elbow grease, we were able to safely lift years of biological buildup.
In the photo below, you can see the D/2 in action during its “blush stage”—where organic growth temporarily turns orange as the cleaner begins breaking it down.

Here is the completed project just a couple of weeks after cleaning. The monument will continue to turn whiter over time as the D/2 Biological Cleaner works with sunshine and rain to gently restore the stone’s natural appearance.

The leadership of Mount Sylvan United Methodist Church took steps to preserve and honor those resting in their historic cemetery. They issued a contract to clean approximately 270 headstones, ensuring the site remains in pristine condition for generations to come.
Our team carefully treated each headstone using D/2 Biological Cleaner and gentle hand-cleaning techniques to restore clarity while preserving the stone's integrity.
An inspiring example of community-led preservation in action.
